What does a chiropractor do?

A chiropractor is a regulated healthcare professional who assesses, diagnoses and manages mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system. In the UK, anyone using the title chiropractor must be registered with the General Chiropractic Council.

01
First visit

Assessment comes first

A first visit normally includes your current concern, relevant health and lifestyle history and a physical examination. The chiropractor should explain the findings, discuss reasonable options and identify when investigation or referral may be more appropriate. Imaging is not a routine requirement.

02
Treatment choices

Care is broader than an adjustment

Depending on the presentation and your preferences, care may involve manual or lower-force joint techniques, soft-tissue work, movement guidance, exercise and practical advice. No single technique is suitable for everyone, and a social-media technique should never replace clinical assessment.

03
Informed choice

Before treatment, you should understand the expected benefits, material risks, alternatives, likely costs and timescale. You can ask questions, decline a technique or stop care. A responsible care plan includes review points and changes when progress is not as expected.

04 / Choosing a chiropractor

What to check before deciding

Choosing care should involve clear information, reasonable expectations and the opportunity to make your own decision.

  • Check Check the GCC register.
  • Ask Ask how progress will be measured, and clarify costs before treatment.
  • Be cautious Be cautious of guarantees, fear-based sales, routine imaging without a clinical reason or indefinite care without review.
